What are the best ways to manage your horse's training in the winter months?

Posted by Kara Kask at December 20. 2008

How do you deal with the weather and your training? Do you give your horse the winter off and resume training in the spring? Is winter just a way to concentrate on training without the distractions of showing? I'm lucky in that our barn has a covered arena and the weather in California never gets that bad, so we train through the winter with some accommodations for the rain, but otherwise we carry on as usual. I would be interested to hear everyone's weather stories, and how they manage in their part of the world.

HI

Winter is tough in KS  Snow Ice wind the mud the more snow ice wind. The only way to do any significant training is to use and indoor arena.  Since I do not have one I trailer to an arena and pay a fee to ride. Not ideal but I try to do it at least once a week .  I also take time to work on my strength balance and endurance.  Mostly I think y horse need a lot less work than i do.  Some friends just board their horse at a facility that has an indoor for a month or two to ride.  I have considered that too.
